How to search for content

How to search for content
Searching for content connected to an ancestor? The surname index lists all surnames appearing on the website. Once you find a surname, there are one or more links to content which includes that surname.

Instructions for searching are shown at the bottom of this page if you'd prefer to search for a surname within a list rather than scrolling down. Use this search guidance in particular if you're looking for entries in the following content.
  • Directories
  • John Skeeles' manuscript
  • WWI Roll of Honour
  • WWI St Ives War Memorial

Unfortunately, it's not possible to use search guidance for the following content.
  • Newspaper cuttings
  • 1885 Business Register
  • Workhouse censuses

In most cases, newspaper cuttings are short and easy to search without help. The 1885 Business Register and the later Workhouse censuses are in alphabetical order. Directories are normally in alphabetical order, but a directory may list a surname in trades and/or public bodies.

To search for content on a computer, click in the content to search and do the following to bring up a search box...
  • on an Apple computer press  keys cmd & F
  • on a Windows computer press Ctrl & F
  • on a Chromebook, from the list icon on top right select More : Find
