The Dun Horse
The Dun Horse dates back to before 1790. They renamed it the Aviator in 1992 after 2nd Lieutenant Kenneth Wastell, who died when he & his biplane knocked the top off the Parish Church spire in 1918. For much of its existence, the pub bordered Poor Folk’s Lane & Square, one of the most deprived parts of St Ives. Today, the building is a private house.
St Ivians remember:
Great memories when Bridie, Con & Molly were there. Mick had MUM tattooed on his forehead. The smell of dope, coppers walking through sniffing. Pool short sticks. Wurlitzer juke box. 1976-1983ish, fantastic timesJohn Wilson, who ran the pub between the two world wars.It was the beginning point of the “crawl” as it were. Good times.Used to go to it when called the Aviator, whilst my son went to karate lessons in the church hall opposite.Used to be opposite what acted as the Church Youth Club, where we sat on the wall with our 6 pen'orth of chips from Dunnington's. Off Licence door down the lane to the left.We used to get a coach from here to London, to watch the boxing in the days of Dave Boy Green and a young Robert Smith.Off limits when the Duffy’s ruled the roost!
