Hush-a-bye baby, by Archie Naish
Hush-a-bye baby on the tree-top.Nurse will see that his cradle won't drop.
Ma's playing bridge and she's quite awake,
But if she is cheating it's all for your sake.
Hush-a-bye baby, hush-a-bye do.
There are two little teeth in his gums peeping through,
And baby shall sleep with those teeth in his head
While mummy puts hers in a tumbler instead.
Though mother leaves baby, she loves him of course,
Though she once went to prison for bashing the force.
Ma wants a vote and she may get it soon,
But baby would be quite content with the moon.
Hush-a-bye baby, hush-a-bye do.
Daddy comes home in the morning at two.
He's playing at golf and perhaps if he wins,
He'll come home seeing double and think you are twins.
Daddy's cooped up in his office all day.
The place is so draughty and damp so they say.
It's haunted by horrible spirits I'm told,
But daddy just keeps them to drive out the cold.
Hush-a-bye baby, or baby I'll smack.
Have a nice bath before daddy comes back.
He's always so dry when he comes home to sup,
If he sees baby's bath why he'll drink it all up.
So hush-a-bye baby, I'll pull down the blind.
His cot isn't paid for, but baby won't mind.
The house is so lonely while mother's away,
But nurse will mind baby for ninepence a day.
Hush-a-bye baby as quiet as a mouse.
There's a policeman outside and he's guarding the house,
And nurse is so fond of her policeman in blue,
So he shall nurse nursie as nurse nurses you.
Hush! Hush! Hush!
In the event of women obtaining the vote these lines may read
Now ma's got her vote and she thinks it's a boon,
But all baby wants is a slice of the moon.
