St Ives Railway
A rail connection was vital to St Ives' continued prosperity. Wisbech was the nearest port with access to the sea. Barge transport was unreliable in winter when rivers froze. A rail connection meant cheaper, faster, more reliable transport of goods. Moving cattle from St Ives to Smithfield took a week, but would be just a day by rail.
Without George Game Day, St Ives might have lost its chance of a railway. Without the railway, there would be no cattle market, no guided busway. Click a button below to learn about George's battle in Parliament, the way St Ives thanked him, the joy of the first passenger trip, and view video simulations of leaving St Ives station by train.
